Touch and Gos
The practical portion of the training begins with Touch and Go exercises, which are designed to help officers become comfortable with the vehicle while learning the fundamentals and mechanics of the maneuver.
Officers experience the exercise from both sides of the maneuver. Each officer will first ride in the vehicle receiving the contact, allowing them to see and feel how the vehicle responds when the maneuver is performed. They will then transition to the driver’s seat and have the opportunity to perform the Touch and Go themselves.
The purpose of the Touch and Go is to teach officers how to make controlled contact with another vehicle and safely disengage, rather than remaining alongside the vehicle or becoming locked into the contact. Officers learn how vehicle positioning, speed, steering input, and throttle control all influence the maneuver and the vehicle’s response.
We spend the most time on this portion of the training because it provides the foundation for the more advanced vehicle intervention techniques that follow. Officers are given multiple opportunities to practice the maneuver, allowing them to develop consistency and confidence while receiving direct feedback and instruction from our instructors.
Instructors closely monitor each exercise and provide guidance throughout the process. Officers will continue practicing until they can successfully demonstrate the proper technique and control before progressing to the next portion of the training.
